Museu do Cardina - Porto Santo

José Cardina's personal devotion led to the opening of the Cardina Museum in 2006, which is situated in Camacha, in the north of the island of Porto Santo. Cardina was fascinated by the historical items found on the island, and she not only gathered them but also made exquisite 1:5 scale copies of the handcrafted tools. In order to preserve their original form, which was sometimes ignored and left in a state of decay, he also created copies of the historic natural water fountains on the island.

The museum itself is housed in a full-sized windmill that is octagonal in shape and identical to ones that had stood throughout the island. Old farm tools and equipment can be located in alcoves along the walls, and models are arranged similarly on a mezzanine floor. Before most of Porto Santo was permanently gone, Cardina conserved a forgotten feature of the city on her own. Booking in advance is required to enter the museum.
