The trail begins at Regional Road 120 and follows the foothills of Pico do Castelo, circling its southern slope, alongside the Levada do Pico do Castelo until reaching Ribeiro Formoso.
It also provides access to the Capela de Nossa Senhora da Graça (Chapel of Our Lady of Grace), which dates back to the 1930s.
The construction of the Levada do Pico do Castelo started in the first half of the 20th century, with the purpose of utilizing rainwater for agricultural purposes.

For many years, the Levada do Pico do Castelo served as a transportation route for the residents of Camacha who wanted to travel to the Serra de Fora area and vice versa. While ascending the Rocha de Nossa Senhora, along a small path, hikers may encounter heather plants (Erica platycodon, subsp. maderincola) and poplar trees (Populus alba). They may also come across patches of low-growing plants locally known as 'Iscas' (Phagnalon hansenii).

After reaching the top of the rock formation, commonly referred to as 'Portelinha', the trail descends towards Serra de Fora and the existing tunnel. By crossing the approximately 530-meter-long tunnel, hikers arrive at Ribeiro Formoso.
